Senesie Sheriff, a postgraduate student in Global Health Research at Oxford University, is making significant strides in maternal and child healthcare through his seed-funded research project. Supported by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR)-CRIBS, Senesie led a study titled: “An Evaluation of the Current Practice of Care Bundle Management in Preterm Birth in Two Main Referral Hospitals in Sierra Leone.”

As the principal investigator, he embarked on this journey with meticulous study design and review by both national and international boards. Securing approval from the Sierra Leone Ethics Committee, Senesie ensured compliance with research standards. Supported by his mentors, he developed a detailed project plan and collaborated closely with the University of Sierra Leone, which hosted the grant.

Through his project, Senesie gained invaluable skills in recruiting and training hospital-based data collectors on electronic data collection using the Kobo Collect Tool. He also ensured smooth project execution by adhering to budget guidelines and engaging stakeholders effectively.

His analysis revealed critical insights into the association between survival outcomes and care bundle packages. Supplementing quantitative data with focus group discussions and interviews with healthcare workers and administrators, Senesie applied thematic analysis to uncover gaps and opportunities in preterm care.

The impactful findings of this research were shared at the Sierra Leone Maternal and Child Health Conference and GLOW 2024 in Scotland, where Senesie had the honor of representing his team.

This experience underscored the importance of community-centered approaches in global health research and solidified Senesie’s commitment to advancing maternal and child health in Sierra Leone.
