From February 18–20, 2025, I had the privilege of attending the Southeast Asian Researcher Career Development Workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand, co-organized by the Academy of Medical Sciences (UK) and Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI). This dynamic event brought together over 70 early-career researchers from across ASEAN to foster collaboration, develop critical research skills, and strengthen regional research capacity.
As a clinical microbiologist and early-stage researcher, the workshop provided an invaluable platform for learning and networking. The sessions focused on three core areas: grant writing, scientific communication, and building collaborative partnerships across Southeast Asia.
Learning Grant Writing from the Inside Out
One of the highlights of the workshop was gaining insights into grant writing, not just from the applicant’s viewpoint, but directly from funders themselves, including representatives from the Wellcome Trust and other major organizations. Understanding how grantors evaluate proposals gave me a new perspective on how to craft compelling, competitive applications that align with funders' goals and priorities.
Building Bridges in Microbiology and Beyond
Throughout the event, I had the chance to engage with like-minded researchers working in similar fields. We exchanged ideas, shared challenges, and explored potential avenues for future collaboration. The atmosphere was one of openness and mutual support—a strong reminder of the power of community in driving research forward.
Field Visit to Siriraj Hospital – Bridging Research and Impact
On February 21, the workshop concluded with a field visit to Siriraj Hospital, one of Thailand’s leading medical institutions. During the visit, we explored ongoing research projects and learned about the resources, infrastructure, and innovations supporting impactful health research for local populations.
The visit highlighted both the opportunities and challenges in conducting meaningful research in resource-limited settings, reinforcing the importance of strategic collaboration and sustainable research capacity development in the region.
Looking Ahead
This workshop was more than a learning event, it was a turning point. It has equipped me with sharper tools for career development and expanded my network across Southeast Asia. I leave with a clearer sense of purpose and renewed energy to pursue impactful research that addresses pressing health challenges in our communities.
Gratitude to the Academy of Medical Sciences and TSRI for organizing such a meaningful experience. I look forward to building on the connections made and contributing to a stronger, more collaborative ASEAN research ecosystem.
