Applications are invited for a Research Associate in the Department of Sociology, University of York. The position is for 12 months in the first instance for the pilot phase of a study and, if the pilot study is successful, the post will be extended for a further 24 months. The start date is 1st April 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

You will be an ambitious and self-motivated researcher to work with our team consisting of social scientists based at York University, consultant midwives based in two hospital trusts (in Yorkshire), and a service representative, on the NIHR funded study Interactional Practices of Decision-making During Childbirth in Maternity Units.

You will have a first degree (or equivalent) in Sociology/Social Science, Midwifery or a related subject. You will also have a PhD (awarded or submitted) or equivalent experience in Sociology, Midwifery or a related subject. A job share may be possible.

You should have a research interest in interaction and communication in healthcare settings, experience of participant recruitment, qualitative interviewing and the administration of questionnaires, data analysis, writing for publication and giving presentations to a range of audiences.

You will join a vibrant, research-intensive Department which is ranked 1st in the UK for research quality (REF2014) (sustaining its premier position established in the previous RAE 2008).
