This training course has been developed to help familiarize those who are providing technical assistance to TB laboratories in low- and middle-income countries with current World Health Organization recommendations and international best practices for TB laboratory strengthening. It is based on the GLI Practical Guide to TB Laboratory Strengthening, which provides practical guidance on use of newly recommended diagnostics in model algorithms, as well as guidance in key technical areas, including quality assurance and quality management systems, specimen collection and registration, procurement and supply chain management, diagnostics connectivity, biosafety, data management, human resources, strategic planning and other topics.

The intended audience includes TB laboratory managers and technicians, programme managers and other officials from Ministries of Health (MoHs), and their partners. However, several of the modules cover general principles that would be of interest to anyone wanting to learn about Good Clinical Laboratory Practice; in particular, the modules on supply chain management, quality assurance and quality management systems, and data management.

The GLI Practical Guide to TB Laboratory Strengthening is an update of the GLI Guide for Providing Technical Support to TB Laboratories in Low- and Middle-Income Countries published in November 2015 as a collaborative product of the Global Laboratory Initiative (GLI) core group. Development of the update was led by Wayne van Gemert, Heidi Albert and Thomas Shinnick, in collaboration with a team from the GLI core group, including Heather Alexander, Martina Casenghi, Lucilaine Ferrazoli, Levan Gagnidze, Alaine Umubyeyi Nyaruhirira, Amy Piatek, Alena Skrahina, Khairunisa Suleiman, Elisa Tagliani, Sabira Tahseen, Nguyen Van Hung and Maarten van Cleeff.

The update builds on the important contributions of many people and organizations to the development of the original edition of this guide, including the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL; Zenda Berrada, Edward Desmond, Robert Ferguson, Sally Liska, William Murtaugh, Christopher R. Peter, Errin Rider and David Warshauer), a writing committee of the GLI core group (Heidi Albert, Kathleen England, Heather Alexander and Amy Piatek), and Christopher Gilpin, Alexei Korobitsyn and Diego Zallocco (WHO Global TB Programme), who provided technical input and oversaw the process of development of the original edition.

This modular training package was developed by André Trollip & Heidi Albert (FIND) with review provided by the GLI core group.
