About this course
This eLearning course on biosecurity principles and laboratory guidelines has been designed for personnel that are familiar with the operations of a microbiology laboratory. The overall aim of these modules is to provide an introduction to biosecurity principles in order to raise awareness of the biosecurity implications of working with infectious agents in the laboratory, aligned with WHO’s Laboratory Biosecurity Guidance (2024). The course was designed by technical specialists in biosecurity and adult learning from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), and reviewed by biosecurity subject matter experts from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
Learning Objectives
Each of the four modules have distinct learning objectives covering the definition, principles, origins, and guidance related to biosecurity, as outlined below:
Module 1 - Biosafety and biosecurity definitions
- Recall the definitions for biosafety & biosecurity
- Identify the similarities & differences between biosafety & biosecurity
- Describe examples of biosafety & biosecurity incidents
Module 2 - Biosecurity Principles
- Recall the eight biosecurity principles
- Describe examples of the eight biosecurity principles
- Define different ocntrols to be considered for each biosecurity principle
Module 3 - Origins of biosecurity
- Recall historical biosecurity events and their importance in shaping biosecurity legislation
- Describe key biosecurity legislation
- Recognise biosecurity guidance documentation
Module 4 - Summary of WHO Laboratory Biosecurity Guidance
- Identify emerging technologies and associated threats
- Explain the principles of biosecurity risk assessment
- Identify the biosecurity control measures
Target Audience
The course is designed for personnel working in or overseeing activities in microbiology laboratory settings, including students, staff, and supervisors/managers. It is deliberately designed to have global scope, with examples drawn from diverse countries and applicability across different regulatory contexts and resource settings.
